Why Yellow Ribbons?

YELLOW RIBBONS

There’s this folk song from the sixties “Tie a yellow ribbon around the OAK TREE”. . . How did the story begin? . . . The songwriter was riding on a bus beside an old man who kept looking desperately through the window.

After he had been questioned about such behavior, the old man explained that he had just been released from jail and he had written to his wife that if she wished him back home she were to tie a yellow ribbon around the oak tree in front of their house. If the old man saw the yellow ribbon tied he would get off the bus and go home; if he didn’t see it he would simply move on and go somewhere else. That report made all the passengers from the bus also feeling like looking through the windows apprehensively . . . To everyone’s amazement the oak tree in front of the old man’s house was covered with yellow ribbons, hundreds of them swinging in the wind, like a big welcome back home flag . . .

There was a robbery in the main Post Office of Ardmore, Oklahoma, where some employees were held as hostages. The mail wasn’t delivered for four days. When the thieves were arrested and everything went back to normal; therefore, the mail could be delivered again, the whole population placed yellow ribbons on their mailboxes to welcome back the mail carriers to their job.

During the Gulf War in support to the families from the American soldiers on their return back home yellow ribbons were sold 50% off the usual price. During the Bosnian War when the American soldier Christopher Stone was captured by the Serves and then rescued by the Americans, the community where he lived with his wife and son in San Antonio, Texas, and his parents community in Detroit, both communities placed yellow ribbons all over to welcome him back home.

FITAS AMARELAS

Existe esta canção folclórica dos anos 60, “Amarre uma fita amarela em volta do Carvalho em frente de casa”. . . Como esta estória começou? . . .

O compositor viajava num ônibus ao lado de um velhinho, que ansiosamente, olhava pela janela do ônibus. Quando lhe foi perguntado o porquê de tal atitude, o velhinho explicou que havia acabado de sair da prisão e que havia escrito para sua esposa que caso ela o quisesse de volta em casa, deveria amarrar uma fita amarela no carvalho em frente da casa deles. Se ele visse a fita amarela no carvalho, desceria do ônibus e iria para casa. Caso contrário, ele simplesmente seguiria viagem para qualquer outro lugar. Sua estória deixou todos os passageiros do ônibus apreensivos e igualmente ansiosos, e, assim como o velhinho, todos os passageiros também ficaram olhando pelas janelas. . Para surpresa deles, o carvalho em frente da casa dele estava coberto de fitas amarelas, centenas delas balançando ao vento como uma grande bandeira de boas vindas de novo ao lar. . .

 Anos mais tarde, houve um grande assalto no Correio Central de Ardmore, Oklahoma, e alguns dos funcionários foram mantidos como reféns. A correspondência não pôde ser entregue por quatro dias. Quando os ladrões foram presos e tudo voltou ao normal, também a correspondência passou a ser entregue normalmente e toda a população colocou fitas amarelas em suas caixas de correio para dar boas vindas aos carteiros, que puderam voltar ao trabalho. Durante a Guerra do Golfo, para apoiar as famílias dos soldados americanos ao voltarem para casa, as fitas amarelas foram vendidas com 50% de desconto. Durante a Guerra da Bósnia, quando o soldado americano Christopher Stone foi capturado pelos Sérvios e depois resgatado pelos americanos, a comunidade onde ele mora com sua esposa em Santo Antonio, Texas, e a comunidade de seus pais, em Detroit, ambas colocaram fitas amarelas por todo lugar, para lhe dar as boas-vindas de volta ao lar.

Nós colocamos fitas amarelas em Nossa Escola para lhes dar as boas vindas na volta às aulas, para dizer-lhes que estávamos com saudades e que os amamos muito.
